A mobile money (MoMo) vendor operating at Torkoni/Blave in the Hohoe Municipality has reportedly taken his own life, leaving the community in shock and mourning. The incident occurred around 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 8, 2026, according to reports from the area. The deceased, whose identity is yet to be officially confirmed, was also known for selling daily essentials such as toothpaste, sponges, and brushes at the Hohoe main lorry station. Assembly Member for the Torkoni/Blave Electoral Area, Mr Derek Adzoe, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the vendor was heard making several phone calls earlier in the day, during which he appeared distressed. Sources indicated the conversations involved demands for money, with the vendor promising to settle the debt via mobile money or electronic cash. Mr Adzoe said some individuals later visited the deceased’s house, knocked on his door, and threatened to report him to the police over the unpaid amount. The vendor’s brother recounted that his sibling’s mood visibly changed after the calls, though he did not disclose the details of the conversation. Later, when the brother returned from town, he found the door locked. Upon forcing entry, he discovered the tragic scene. The Assembly Member expressed deep concern over the incident, describing it as a devastating loss for the community. Police have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death, including the reported threats and financial pressure. The case has reignited discussions on mental health, debt-related stress, and the need for support systems in rural and semi-urban areas.
